Modern Digital Designs for The Megan Series

My Dad, Owen Jones, is a writer, as regular readers of my blog will already know, and has been a author of books for ten years on February 21st 2022. I was a teenager then, but I remember the excitement of the occasion very well.

It had taken him about fifteen years to produce a book from his father’s automatic writings as a Spiritual Healer, and the last thing that he had to do was produce a cover for the book.

Looking back on it, it probably shouldn’t have, but it did come as a shock that he would have to do that as well. Now, my Dad knows his way around the Internet, but this was a totally new experience, and it was for me too.

Anyway, to cut a long story short, he did that and uploaded everything to the leading online bookshops of the day.

The cover was basically a flat image of the front cover of the book, but that was what all authors were providing at the time.

However, over the years, some more design-savvy authors began to provide more eye-catching cover images.

As far as I recall, it began with spread-eagled shots of the front and back covers plus the spine. They were definitely a big improvement.

After that, book covers went 3-D, and that is even better in my opinion, as a general item, but there are specialised uses for all three styles.

Finally, so far, that is, some authors are putting modern digital designs and the 3-D covers with the blurb on a relevant background image, and that is the bee’s knees in book advertising covers for me.

Mijn vader was een Spiritistische Genezer, net als zijn moeder en drie zussen, terwijl zijn vader en zeven broers een beetje bang waren voor de concepten van Spiritisme. Mijn moeder geloofde in de principes van Spiritisme, maar haar ouders waren katholiek en waren er extreem tegen.

Mijn Vader

Mijn vader vertelde me echter altijd dat mijn moeder een heks was, en ze gaf vaak toe een witte heks te zijn. Mijn vader zei dat haar moeder ook een oude heks was, maar ik denk dat dat kwam omdat ze niet met elkaar konden opschieten. Toen mijn ouders trouwden, woonden ze bij mijn grootouders van moederskant, en nog een korte tijd nadat ik was geboren.

De basis voor alle verhalen in de Megan-serie vinden hier hun oorsprong. Mijn moeder vertelde me veel verhalen over mijn babytijd, dus ik ben de baby waarnaar ik verwijs, hoewel de rest van de serie naar mijn moeder verwijst. Ik heb ons tweeën samnegebracht omwille van het verhaal. Grrr de tijger was ook mijn vertrouwelinge, hoewel mijn beide ouders haar konden zien.

Blijkbaar droeg ze Grrr op voor me te zorgen wanneer mijn moeder me voor een korte tijd moest verlaten, bijvoorbeeld terwijl ze naar de WC ging. Ik herinner me dit alles maar heel vaag, maar ik kende mijn moeder eenentwintig jaar voordat ze op tweeënveertigjarige leeftijd overleed, en ze was volkomen bij haar verstand.

“The Misconception” is the first story in the Megan Series Audiobooks of twenty-three novelettes about the spiritual development of Megan, a young girl. In the first story, she is twelve years of age. She has latent, supernatural powers and is curious about how to use them, but no-one that she knows seems to have any idea what she is talking about.

She tries asking her mother and even asks friends at school, but she gets no help. However, it is unclear whether her mother has had previous experience with the paranormal, although we do see early on in the first novelette that Megan’s maternal grandmother was against the paranormal too.

Her grandmother and her mother do everything they possibly can to prevent Megan from finding out any more. The first volume shows Megan’s frustration with the living, so when help comes from Beyond, she grasps it with both hands and slowly develops her supernatural powers.

The Megan Series Audiobooks is about Megan’s psychic Awakening.

‘The Misconception’ is about the paranormal powers which lie in all of us, which would make them not so much paranormal as quite normal, if people were not so frightened of the supernatural, which is quite natural too.

In the following books, and they are being released at the rate of one a month, we see Megan’s behaviour under different circumstances. We also meet the people, and animals, who interact with her. The main characters are: Megan’s mother, Suzanne; Megan’s father, Robert; her spiritual guide, Wacinhinsha, her maternal grandfather, Gramps and her familiar, a huge Siberian tiger called Grrr.

Wacinhinsha is a senior Spiritual Guide who has come to help Megan because she had no-one else, and was actually being punished for her curiosity into the paranormal and supernatural. He is a native American, what most people outside the USA would call a Red Indian of the Sioux tribe.

Wacinhinsha has a deep knowledge of spiritual life and is willing to help Megan with anything that she wants to know, which no-one else she knows is seems able to do.

Her grandfather, Gramps, has been dead for about thirteen years, but he is still very much a novice. He wants to help Megan and tries to get involved but his inexperience trips him up sometimes. Despite that, Megan is close to her Gramps as she has known him as a ‘ghost’ since she was a baby

Grrr is a tiger that died a long time ago. She cannot speak any language but tiger, of course, and humans do not understand much tiger – Megan is no exception. However, Megan and Grrr tend to understand each other a little more than anyone with a close pet does, although Grrr is not a pet by any stretch of the imagination.

I have always been suspicious that book give-aways are counter-productive, but I am open to learning that I am wrong, so I have decided to conduct an experiment. To that end, I have added a page to this, my busiest website, for book give-aways, although it will probably become a permanent feature of the blog.

Megan Publishing Services had an average of 90,000 page-views a month in 2015, although I don’t know much about the demographics. However, given the title of the blog, I assume that most surfers know that it must be about reading and writing before they click the hyper-link to get there.

If you are an author who would like to test whether book give-aways work in your case, please follow the link at the bottom of this page. Likewise if you are a reader wishing to take advantage of what you will find there.

(I have also added links to some free videos that have given me food for thought recently).

If you, as an author, would like to run a book give-away for a limited time only, say, the first week of the New Year, that is possible too – just pass me the dates when the give-away should be live.

For those of you who revel in statistics, I should be able to provide an insight into how many times your book was downloaded, which I don’t think I have seen any other site offering. At the end of January, I could run a short poll to find out how successful the book give-aways were, if there is enough interest.

I have read all eleven titles in the Megan Series so far, so I will review the series as a whole rather than just each individual book. The series opens with ‘The Misconception’, which may seem like a strange title until you have read it.

‘The Misconception’ actually sets the story for the rest of the series, which should really be read in sequence, but it is not absolutely necessary, although reading this one first is best really.

It opens with Megan, a young girl, locked in the coal hole ‘for being naughty’, although most sane people would not agree with her mother that she was naughty, or that the punishment fitted the crime, if indeed one had been committed.

We learn that this is not the first time she has been locked in that dark, dirty, scary cellar, but some friends come to console her, namely her familiar, a ghost tiger called Grrr and her deceased grandfather.

Despite her mother’s cruelness, Megan feels a special bond wither her, so she doesn’t tell her father what is going on. He suspects nothing.

The last chapter of the book, each book or novella, in fact, has Megan’s Spirit Guide giving her advice on how to become a better, stronger person, with lessons on how to develop her psychic powers, a subject that has interested Megan for years, despite her tender age. It is also the cause of her imprisonment.

In the following novellas, Megan finds herself in all sorts of common, everyday situations, but her take on them is far from average. Each story can be read alone, but the reason why she is like she is comes from ‘The Misconception’ which is why it should be read first.

The other ten novellas include Megan at school, on an outing, on holiday, being bullied, having a birthday, et cetera, et cetera, all charming little stories that can be read on several levels, although sensitive Catholics may not like them much.

Carpenter has promised one new novella every month and I believe that a twelfth is being written now.

Great Spirit, whose voice is on the wind, hear me. Let me grow in strength and knowledge.

Make me ever behold the red and purple sunset. May my hands respect the things you have given me.

Teach me the secrets hidden under every leaf and stone, as you have taught people for ages past.

Let me use my strength, not to be greater than my brother, but to fight my greatest enemy – myself.

Let me always come before you with clean hands and an open heart, that as my Earthly span fades like the sunset, my Spirit shall return to you without shame.

Megan is a 13-year-old teenage girl, who realises that she has psychic powers that others do not have. At first, she tried to talk to her mother about them, but with disastrous consequences, so she learned to keep quiet about them.

However, some people do offer to help and an animal showed a special friendship, but they were not ‘alive’ in the normal sense of the word. They had passed on.

Megan has three such friends: Wacinhinsha, her Spirit Guide, who had been Sioux in his last life on Earth; her maternal grandfather, Gramps and a huge Siberian tiger called Grrr.

Wacinhinsha is extremely knowledgeable in all things spiritual, psychic and paranormal; her grandfather is a novice ‘dead person’ and Grrr can only speak Tiger, as one might imagine and most of that, of course is unintelligible to humans.

This book is about Megan’s psychic development which continues in subsequent novellas in ‘The Megan Series’.

My Birthday – August 14th

It was my birthday yesterday on August the 14th.

I am a birthday person in that I love to celebrate other people’s birthdays more than Cristmas and certainly more than new year, but I don’t like celebrating my own.

This has something to do with with not like being the centre of attention far, far more than not wanting to admit that I am getting older, but it is more than that too.

My wife, Neem, and we have only been maried for five years, insists that I have a party and she is very good at putting one on. I do’t begrudge her the pleasure of doing it or the pleasure that others may derive from attending, but I actually prefer to do what I did for thirty years before meeting Neem and that was to just go out alone on a pub crawl and see what happens.

Those days seem to be behind me now, but I would go out, sit alone in bars where I was not known and not mention that it was my birthday unless it came up in conversation, which it sometimes does.

Anyway, yesterday, in front of ten or fifteen people during the morning phase of the do, the postman arrived with a parcel. People assumed that it was from my family, but Neem and I knew better. In fact, it was from my printers and was two weeks early, but great timing. I opened the box and Neem handed copies of my latest three books around.

Everyone was suitably impressed. That happened several times throughout the day, until one Thai woman, at about 7pm, asked who ‘that lady in the book’ was. Well, I had not put any ‘lady’ in my book, so I looked, but I had no idea.

Between the pages of 122 and 124, where I had planned page 123 to go, was a book of 40 odd pages of poetry entitled ‘The Verse of Life’. I had never heard of the book and did not recognise the photo or the name of the authoress.

It is strange though. That section fits as neatly into my book called ‘Maya – Illusion’ as an interlude used to in the cinema.

I will have to have it removed from future editions of my book, but I am glad that I have four copies containing it too.

Another thing that happened on my birthday was my birthday give-away.

I decided to be magnanimous and give a free ebook copy of ‘The Misconception’ to whomever wanted it for the 24 hours of my birthday. I really pulled the stops out and promo’d it through a few clubs I am in, Twitter, Facebook and a 120-strong readers list of my own.

The result was that 24 people downloaded it and I was one of those! Twenty-four people out of seven billion!

Now, I don’t call that a disaster, because I don’t really see why I should give my work away anyway, but it is very odd that when I have done this give-away thing before,I never told anyone and always had 200-500 takers and this time I really tried and only got twenty-three (or four).

The Megan Series was launched in June 2013 with the first novella in the series called ‘The Misconception’.
It may seen an unusual title for a book about a young girl, but the name occurred to me when the phrase ‘You are no child of mine’, or something similar was used several times in the story.

The title actually works quite well on several levels as there are normal misconceptions in the story as well. We will have to wait to see whether Megan uses the words ‘The Misconception’ in reference to herself, but it is early days yet.

Megan has supernatural powers or rather she has psychic powers that are usually dormant in all human beings. Hers have been awakened somehow and she is looking for someone to show her what they are and how she can use them.

Her grandmother did not cotton on when Megan was very young and her mother actually locked her in the coal cellar for persistently asking about or referring to her paranormal gifts. Megan had also asked her school friends, some of whom said they could see auras, but she does not know how much she can believe what they say.

The only comfort she has, she gets from a dead Siberian tiger called Grrr, who is devoted to her, her dead maternal grandfather who also seems to be finding his way around his new abode ‘in Heaven’ and a native American from the Sioux tribe called Wacinhinsha, who has also passed away.

Wacinhinsha said that he is one of her Spirit Guides. The fact that most of her best friends do not have bodies does not bother Megan.

Megan’s Thirteenth

The second novella is called ‘Megan’s Thirteenth’ and is about her birthday party, naturally.

I don’t want to spoil the stories in the Megan Series for you, so it is hard to discuss them any more, but suffice it to say that Megan will go on learning about her unusual abilities little by little throughout the Megan Series, which I expect to be a long one, as stories on this theme have been an idea of mine for some time.

The idea for the stories came from my mother fifty years ago. She had similar experiences to Megan and although she was never locked in the cellar for showing her psychic powers, she was ridiculed and punished by her Catholic mother.

Like Megan, she was certain that her mother was acting completely independently and that her father did not know what his wife was doing to their daughter.

The tiger was my own. I don’t remember it’s name, but I had an imaginary friend tiger for four or five years until I was about six or seven, when I probably thought it best not to talk about it in school. I do not remember that bit, but it reminds me of the sad story of Puff The Magic Dragon.

I do hope that my tiger did not wander off feeling alone and abandoned because of a thoughtless boy who was just being conditioned by society to conform in the way that most of us are.

Getting Started

I am just getting started with this new blog and so beginning to learn how to set up this template. It is fairly new to me, but it seems straight forward..

Unfortunately, I do not have a lot of time to devote to this task at the moment as I want to publish two books before the end of July, which gives me four days – not long at all.

One will be the final book in the trilogy called ‘Behind The Smile – the Story of Lek, a Bar Girl in Pattaya’ and the other is ‘Megan’s Thirteenth’ in the Megan Series, so I will be posting more about that later.

Sunday 28th July, Afternoon: I have spent the last hour adding a few plugins to my WP template and activating them. One was Facebook another Tweets old post (not that I have any yet) and another has added links to some of my books.

Back to proofreading Lek3, ‘Maya – Illusion’ – 18,000 words to go 🙂

SUNDAY evening: I have finished rereading ‘Maya – Illusion’ and am ready to publish on CreateSpace and Kindle!

This is always an exciting moment fot me. I love to see the books on line and them become available a few days later 🙂

I published on CreateSpace, but I had already done a lot of preparatory work last week. The cover and the blurb had already been written and the author bio was the same as before.

Then I did the same for Kindle, but Kindle reported errors using basically the same file that I had used for CS!

It seems that the conversion from OpenOffice to Word had created about 30 duplicate words! (Or that OpenOffice had not picked them up, but I doubt that very much!).

I may have to redo the CS edition. In fact, I had better be getting started on that right away, but Kindle is all right!

‘Megan’s Thirteenth’ is now available on Amazon, Lulu and Xinxii. 🙂
