Fiction or Non-fiction.
The first consideration is whether it is your intention is to write fiction of non-fiction. Perhaps you already have an idea for a gripping novel, or a non-fiction topic that fascinates you. If you don’t already have an idea for a novel, which can also be non-fiction of course, it is difficult to just invent one on the spot. Unless, perhaps you go for the life and times of a local celebrity past or present.
Choose Your First Book as an Indie Author
However, if you love what you do, then you might enjoy writing about it. Furthermore, if you enjoy writing about something, the chances are that you’ll be happy about researching and learning more about it every day. So, choose a topic that interests you, and you’ll find yourself naturally gravitating toward it. Like ‘Making Wine from the Grapes In the Garden’.
To Plan Or Not To Plan?
Or in writers’ technical terms, are you a planner or a pantser? As in ‘flying by the seat of…’ I personally do a bit of both, however, I plan less in a novel that I do for a manual. After all, a manual is factual, so in our example, if you forget to talk about feeding your grapes it’s a pretty serious omission, but if I forget to tell you something about a character in a novel, the chances are that you’ll never know about it. Still, before I start to write a book, I think about it for a few days and write down all relevant thoughts. With my novels, I usually know where I want to start and where I want to finish, but I’m not sure how to get there. It’s a lot like being in Cardiff and wanting to drive to Portsmouth with time being unimportant. You put those two points into a route planner and you get various routes. The way points are your initial chapter headings.
Start Writing!
So, I now have my starting point, a few cities along the way and my destination, but that doesn’t mean that I have to go that way when I get into my car. I may have to divert because of roadworks, or I may fancy stopping off of in a pretty little village for lunch. It is the same with a work of fiction for me. Sometimes, the final destination changes too! And titles change all the time, especially if your characters talk to you as mine do.
How Long Is The Journey?
A popular saying amongst writers is that the book is finished when the story is over, but it’s not always as simple as that. In Daddy’s Hobby (above), the protagonist, Lek, would not stop talking to me…telling me what to write and how to say it. It was my first novel, but I had done some research and it told me that a first novel should not be much more than 100,000 words. I tried to stop several ties, but Lek would not keep quiet. When I got to 112,000 I just went on strike. However, she still kept talking to me, so I started a sequel. By the way, that series ran to over 800,000 words in seven volumes! It is easier with non-fiction. When you have told the person’s factual story, or you have explained how to grow grapes and turn them into wine, the book is over.
Editing, Proofreading, Formatting and the Cover.
Now, you have a different set of decisions to make. Do you edit, proofread, format and publish the book yourself or farm it out? A lot of indie authors find this the boring bit, although there is worse to come, more on which later. I do it all myself, but it is not so easy. The way I look at it though is that it is better to discover your weaknesses and learn from your mistakes. I have learned that if I read through it immediately, I will miss most of my typos. It is a common phenomenon. Your brain remembers what it wanted to write, and that is what you see – even in a 100k-word novel! It is quite amazing So, I wait a fortnight, but during that time, I design the book cover in my head, and write a title, subtitle, and description (blurb) for the book. Give your thoughts on the cover to a professional cover designer and let them get on with that, while you write, rewrite and perfect the blurb. If you have any of the fortnight left, create an author’s blog, and write as many different draft Tweets as you can.
Marketing Your First Book as an Indie Author
There are many, many opinions on this topic. Some say to start marketing as soon as you start writing, if not before! So, their theory is that you explain the journey, a sort of running commentary, as your book progresses. Some actually tell the (bones of) the story too. Others just talk about the nuts and bolts of writing or / and the emotions that it generates. I usually start my promo in the two weeks before editing starts.
TIP: as I write, I might mention something I am not sure about, say the date of a famous battle. I mark these uncertainties with ***, so I know to check them on the edit.
My routine is to start sending out Tweets and other promo material to social media now. I combine the editing and formatting and read through my book twice, which often takes a week. Then, I correct every mistake that I see as soon as I see it, and I eliminate the ***’s. Then, I scan the book fairly quickly to see if the formatting is regular. I find that this is more important than getting it ‘right’.
H1 for the title; H2 for chapter titles; all chapters start on a new right-hand page, etc, etc. Then, I do a search the text for *** and eliminate any that remain.
Finally, I read through it again slowly for the last time. Everything has to be perfect in my eyes now, because that is it. Many authors will then send the completed product to beta readers, friends and family, who will point out even more errors. This can be embarrassing, but not as much as if you publish with them in the book.
Publishing Your First Book as an Indie Author
You don’t have a lot of options as an indie writer. You will become an indie publisher to, and the best way to start is at Amazon KDP. It’s pretty straight-forward to complete an ebook, paperback and hardback within a couple of hours. When you are done, your book will be published within 72 hours. Then real work of selling your first book as an indie author begins.

Sell Books Directly.
Another option is to sell your book directly through Amazon KDP. This is an easy way to reach a large number of potential buyers at once. However, there are some drawbacks to selling your books directly through Amazon. First, you must pay a fee to list your print book. Second, you must wait until your book sells enough copies to qualify for free shipping. Finally, you must keep track of inventory yourself. You could buy, say, twenty author copies at a time from Amazon, and sell them signed through your blog, but then there’s shipping to take care of too.
Special Offers.
Many publishers and aggregators, such as Amazon and Smashwords make it easy to make promotional offers with discount coupons or time sensitive price reductions. Write A Great Title.
Make sure that your title is catchy and interesting. It should also be short and concise for a novel, longer perhaps for non-fiction. Don’t write something like “How to sell books as an author.” Instead, try something like “The Ultimate Guide to Selling Your Book as an Author” or “Selling Your Book as an Author – Step by Step”. Novels will require a similar, but slightly different, approach. Look at other titles in your genre on a best selling list.
Find The Right Platform To Sell Books As An Author.
There are so many different platforms out there that it’s hard to choose just one. If you’re looking to make money online, Amazon Kindle Direct Publishing (KDP) might be right for you. KDP allows authors to upload ebooks directly to Amazon’s website. Once uploaded, readers can purchase books through Amazon’s site. Promote Yourself And Your Work.
If you’re looking to sell books as an author, you need to promote yourself and your work. Start by creating an author website that includes a biography, links to your books, your social media accounts, and contact information. Then, start sharing your story online through not only traditional social media like blogs, Twitter, Facebook, LinkedIn, Instagram, and Pinterest, but also Tik-Tok, Inkitt and Wattpad.
Marketing Books
You will need to know something about marketing, promoting or advertising. It’s all the same really. If that is an alien concept to you, then you will need to realise soon that that is part and parcel of being an indie-writer. No-one is going to sell your books for you. Publishers and aggregators will put them on their virtual bookshelves, but no-one will know that they are there unless you – yes, you! – tell them. You can employ people to help you, but it is hard to know who is a honest and who is not; who knows the job, and who doesn’t.
I think that the correct ratio of writing to promoting is 3:4, but I have a lot of books to promote and have been doing it for more than a decade. If you have only one, or two books, perhaps you will get away with 2:5. Although, that depends on how much you know about marketing. Perhaps, 3:4 is still right, until you you know more about how to sell your book(s).

It will also give you more flexibility when creating new content for your site. You would be forgiven for wondering what the point of acquiring PLR is, if you have to rewrite it yourself anyway. It is important to realise that free PLR on a popular subject has probably been rewritten, at least to some extent, hundreds, or perhaps, thousands of times. How many variations is it possible to derive from one 500-word article? OK, an almost infinite number is probably the correct answer, but a powerful analyst like Google would see through your content. So, my advice is never to use free PLR unless it is on an obscure topic. Always buy from a reputable source, because then you know that the writer has researched the topic, and not sold too many copies. I also recommend that you buy a bundle of targeted or niche articles on one topic. It offers more choice, more ideas and more opportunity.
Find Out Which Keywords You Should Be Targeting.
If you’re looking to write original content for your website, then you need to find out what keywords you should be targeting. This means finding out what people are searching for online and writing content based on those searches. You can use tools such as SEMrush to help you with this process. It will show you what keywords people are using when they search for certain topics. Once you know what words people are typing into Google, you can start creating unique content that stands out from the crowd. Find your ideal content by using your chosen keywords or key phrases. Many re-writers (and translators) create a blank paragraph above the one they are working on. The trend these days, is to keep the paragraphs and sentences short. Other tips include not using the same words in the same place as in the original and definitely replacing word pairs or phrases. It is difficult to edit technical or medical terms, but some alterations are usually possible and there are often British and American spellings (but stick to one or the other in each article). It is useful to use the technical term only once and then replace it with terms in common usage like ‘lumbago: backache, back pain, lower back pain’. Good source PLR makes a big difference, so buy quality PLR. It spawns ideas, cuts down on research and provides tramlines to guide you in the creation of exclusive content containing engaging information. Another point, is that good PLR in English is fantastic for those whose other tongue is not English. PLR gets a bad press because lazy people misuse it. However, in the right hands, it can be used successfully to publish a flood of high quality, targeted niche article content for your online publication fairly quickly, which will help you gain traffic and kudos, enabling you to become more successful in affiliate marketing.
I feel that I have already written too much of late about my new book covers, but it is a very important strategy in my plans for the future
I have quite a few books, but most of them were written years ago and the covers are stale. So, they need replacing. There is no argument about that. However, at what pace?
Obviously, cost is a constraint. People say that the benefits that the new covers will bring in… increased revenue… will pay for future investment. However, it doesn’t always work like that. Returns can be slower than hoped for.
Unexpected Results of Cover Changes
This can be because old customers don’t recognise the new covers or series formats. The benefits of change can be slow to accrue. Slower than hoped for, or expected anyway.
One thing that keeps me hopeful though is that I receive compliments on my new book covers several times a week, and mostly from people I don’t know.
That is encouraging, because even using the best cover design company in the world, it is a big step to rebrand… expensive too.
The company that I use allows an infinite number of remakes, but, which is perfect for the novice, even if a little embarrassing. It is far better to have thought about what information you want your new book cover to display beforehand. My tip is get a book off your shelf that is ‘similar’ to yours, ie if yours is in a series use one from a series as an example to copy.
My New Book Covers Checklist
So, my checklist for book cover design is: you will need the book title and your name for a start. Other options include: a subtitle, a series name, the number of the book in the series, and collaborators. Then on the back cover: a description or blurb, an author bio (and photo?), the title(s) (again?), and the cover designer. All the while remembering that you will need to leave enough room for the barcode.

First, I would like to set out my credentials to the translators and narrators reading this article.
I have been writing for many years, but before that, I was a translator of six languages into English. Then audiobooks began to take off in about 2018, but I am a little dyslexic, and so am a hesitant, unreliable reader.
However, I have written 175 books, and I got into translating them quite quickly. So, to sum up, I have about 800 publications in forty languages as I am writing this piece.
Translators and Narrators
I am indebted to many translators and narrators for getting us to this point. For I truly believe that big things can only come from co-operation.
Having said that, very few of those translators and narrators have earned enough to draw a payment from the publishers It saddens me greatly, and this is the point of this article.
Why is that?
After years of thought on the matter, I am convinced that it has to do with out-dated, old-fashioned snobbery. Sorry, guys, but in the good old days, translators and narrators went to university, got a good job, performed it and earned their money per job or per week. They had a status.
However, nowadays, a lot of these guys are out of a job, and are taking gigs translating and narrating books privately. All well and good, but who is going to sell these books?
Previously, it did not concern them. That was the client’s responsibility.
Sales and Marketing
The translators and narrators have no experience. In fact, in many societies, selling is considered menial. It is not something that a university graduates think they should have to stoop to.
My point is that those days have gone!
Many translators and narrators rely on the author to sell their product, but talking from my own experience, I don’t know anyone in most of the languages that my books exist in.
I may know two or three Arabs, a couple of Hindus, a few Spanish people, a Dutchman and a German, but I can’t sell enough books to that little lot to keep a hundred people going! Not with the best will I the world.
The only people who do know enough are the translators and narrators!
They have to sell the books or no books get sold!
Having said that, the author has to provide all the marketing material and support necessary to enable success, and translators and narrators have to climb down from their high horses and accept that the world has changed, and that sales and marketing are not dirty words.
When I started thinking of applying for Google AdSense, this blog was receiving 10,000 unique visitors per month, who visited 30,000 times and read 250,000 pages. Google AdSense’s online earnings calculator suggested that those statistics should earn me about $1,000 a month.
That is not to be sniffed at, so I applied, and was granted a license to show Google Ads for AdSense.
However, it was a steep learning curve for me, and there was Covid, and I was getting into commissioning audiobooks from Dad’s novels. The audiobooks were going really well, and so Google’s AdSense took a back seat, along with the blog in general.
Looking back on it, that was a silly, naive move, since it had taken Dad more than ten years to build up the blog, and I threw away a lot of that effort chasing money.
Anyway, this year I have been concentrating on AdSense, but I have problems. To make Adsense work, you need an active website. The more active the better!
Google Tools
I use Awestats in cPanel for my statistics, as Dad did before for the figures above. It is depressing. I now receive 5,000 uniques (unique visitors), who make 15,000 visits and read 130,000 pages. So, about half of what used to happen.
Right?
Google Adsense
So, why does Google AdSense and Google Analytics report only 300 pageviews a month? Fifty times less?
Last year, the blog earned $2.10 all year. With all my extra work this year, I have earned 30c a month!
How can that be?
If 5,000 visitors are reading 130,000 pages, how can they only be clicking two or three times a month?
I can think of only two possible reasons.
Google AdSense is not being displayed on all the visible pages
Awestats is reporting falsely.
What do you think?
I blame Google AdSense 🙂 (not really).
Update March 2023: A high percentage of the pages on this blog were not being crawled. I think that the reason for this was a blog theme we used to use which would create ‘pages’ out of Twitter posts, categories and tags. It looked great having thousands of pages, but Google was not fooled because many of them had only ten words or less on them. We are now rooting those pages out and deleting them.
A worrying sign today, we had 6% more impressions than 28 days ago, and 7% more clicks, but the pay rate for them was $0.00 That doesn’t look good, does it?

Why am I guessing that?
Well, I am a writer, and I recognise the signs of someone who needs a good cover to wrap around his or her work 🙂
For example, we have all been advised for decades not to judge a book by its cover, but, being authors, we also know that everybody does just that, don’t we?
There is something I want to tell you, if you will allow me a minute.

However, I have experienced a gradual decline in ebook sales over the last few years, but didn’t notice it because of increased audiobook sales, the production of which I had recently instigated.
One day, I was analysing my sales and realised how much the sales of my core products (ebooks) had dropped.
It flabbergasted me!
It kick started me into action, and I soon found out that my great book covers of seven-ten years ago were old fashioned, and lacking in a current style. I had no concept of book cover fashion or style!
New BookCovers
However, when you think of it like this, it makes perfect sense. If you had a clothing shop, and you dressed the mannequins in the window at the height of fashion on your opening day, would it surprise you if sales diminished over the years using the same display?
Further research revealed that Frank Herbert’s The Dune Series have been assigned completely new book covers every five years since they were first published in the Sixties!
Why?
Because it makes sense, style and fashion change, that’s why!
My Example
So, how old are your book, album or website covers, and have sales been declining?
My recent discovery has been a Ukrainian company, and I will give you my link to them after I show you how they improved the ten-year-old cover of my best-selling book.

I have shown these before (left) and after book covers to thousands of readers and writers, and no-one, not a solitary one of them, preferred the old one over the new one.
Why?
Reasons given were that the new one is brighter, more colourful, more eye-catching, more modern and more subtle in style.
…and I have to agree, although I was not an immediate convert.
Now, perhaps, I am old-style, but then, perhaps that is the problem! I have no real understanding that new book covers can be a fashion statement; that they can be more interesting to a younger or more fashion-conscious readership.
So, what do you get and for how much?
It’s unbelievable, really. Your new book cover package will include: an ebook cover, a paperback (front and back) cover, a mock-up AND unlimited revisions!

First of all, I think that we had better agree on our terminology using the phrase ‘travel plr ebook’ as an example. PLR stands for ‘private label rights’, which I have always found confusing, but it is definitely not the same PLR as the British Library uses, which has to do with ‘public lending rights’. Our term means that someone has written an article and is giving or selling you the right to use it. This right may be completely free of restrictions, or there may be exclusions to it.
So, a Travel PLR Ebook is generally considered to be a collection of related niche content articles. In the case of the niche content ebooks that I have put together (on this site), I have written all of the chapters in the books myself, and there are typically about 15 500-word pieces in each book.
It is important that the content of these books is ‘fresh’, that is, that it has not been overused. Cheap PLR articles are usually old, and search engines have seen them before, and so will mark them as duplicate content, penalising any website that uses them. This is why I always recommend rewriting niche PLR content a little, so that you know that it is original.
Let’s look into how you might use a Travel PLR Ebook as an example.
Travel PLR
Travel is an unusually broad subject, so it would be very easy to find travel PLR articles. Let’s say that you run a travel blog, whether it is full of your own experiences or it is an affiliate marketing site doesn’t really matter. An active blog needs several new articles a week to keep the search engines happy, to hold or improve your Page rank. This is time-consuming, and there are periods when time may be short. Over the (school) holidays, over New Year, during sickness, for example. At these times, it is handy to have a batch of articles that you can turn to to plug the gap.
My travel PLR ebooks of, say, 15 niche PLR articles, would cover a lot of sick days, or give you a fortnight off over Christmas and the New Year. You could also use these travel PLR articles in newsletters, if you are concerned about only using guaranteed original material. They would be great for an affiliate marketing campaign, in which you are promoting holidays.
A travel PLR ebook of 15 niche, targeted articles, would also be enough to put up a website or blog quickly. You could use ten articles to populate the blog, and use five articles to promote it around social media! In a morning, you would have a fully-functioning Travel Blog that you could further improve later on at your leisure.
Many writers look down on PLR articles, but if used correctly travel PLR or a travel PLR ebook can be a boon for a travel business.
Today, some friends suggested that I should consider republishing books from my flagship series Behind The Smile. However, I find it almost impossible to contemplate.
That is a huge concept to get my head around.
It has produced most of my sales for the last decade!
Republishing
Their suggestion was made because we were talking about my book sales, which have been slowing down for about a year. So, they thought that it might be worth rebranding, and then republishing the books in this series.
I am not completely sure what they mean by that. I think that it probably has to do with altering the titles, the blurbs and the genre, and then encapsulating all that in new covers in order to make the series more selectable by a new readership. In fact, a large part of this proposed rebranding would be to create new covers to reflect the new genre.
On the face of it, I like the idea. But when you dig down into what republishing books entails, it involves a massive amount of time and work. After all, I have spent ten years building up a readership for the series as it is and looks now. It is recognisable as it is.
If I change everything, I will have to unpublish the existing series of seven volumes, thereby losing all possible sales on them, and republish the new ones… Effectively starting from scratch again.
Rebranding Books
It is a big gamble.
In an attempt to find out more, I did a search on ‘rebranding books’, and came up with several very interesting articles. These authors didn’t actually go the whole hog of ‘rebranding and then republishing books, but they talked about cover make-overs.
One article was about the legendary Dune by Frank Herbert. I think I remember rightly that it was first published in 1965. Anyway, the interesting bit is that the whole series of five books has had completely new covers every five years ever since!
Rewriting?
Look the article up, it opened my eyes. I have always written and published books, slapped a cover on them and that was it. However, apparently cover design is also prey to fashion, which is very difficult to pin down, as we all know – look at clothing!
So, I will start with new covers, but I will keep rebranding and republishing open in my mind as an option.
What do readers think of this marketing tactic, and have any authors who come here any experience with rebranding and/or republishing books?

People say that one should never judge a book by its cover, but it is widely acknowledged that having a great book cover is the best way of selling books. It seems that people do not pay any heed the ancient advice.
To be fair to readers though, there isn’t a lot more to go on when one is standing in a bookshop with a choice of two novels in one’s hands. Otherwise, there is the title (and subtitle), the author’s name, but it could be an unknown, and the blurb, which could be the best piece of writing that the book contains!
Don’t laugh! It really could be… it could have been written by an expert for the author.
Why, only recently, Elon Musk admitted to doing exactly the same, and he is far from being the only one… very far!
I also recently saw a writer asking the question whether it was more important to have a good book cover or to have the book well edited. The overwhelming response on the forum was that if the cover is unappealing then no-one will ever know about the poor editing!
Most people judge by appearances in their everyday lives anyway, don’t they? Clothes, fruit, people… and books.
Once you realise that, it is obvious what you have to do to have a chance of selling books.
Book-selling Magnets
To this end, I have started to revamp some of my father’s books… with his permission, of course. I have learned how to make fantastic-looking 3D covers, and even better posters incorporating them!
We are also looking at professional cover designers to see if one catches our eye.
Nevertheless, we are both very proud of the book selling magnets, that we call cards, and are confident that they will increase sales.
Here’s hoping for a bigger share in the book selling market 🙂

When the property is there, but it’s value is not being realised…
I know an author… Yes, all right, my father, Owen Jones, who has 1250 publications registered in his name on Amazon. Furthermore, they are all original books penned by him. However, he is not making a living from the books that he has created.
Many of his original works in English have been translated. Not only that, but all those books in English, and many other languages, exist as ebooks, paperbacks, audiobooks and even hardbacks.
I’ll say it again: 1250 publications with his name on them to date!
However, they are earning next to nothing… a giant pizza a week. He is not really making a living from books. In fact, he was earning more from his first few books ten years ago, than he is from all these hundreds now.
Book Sales
This doesn’t seem right to me. When I ask him about it, he says he likes writing and working with other writers both home and abroad. He suggests that he has probably fallen behind modern marketing methods.
I don’t know whether that is true or whether his low sales are attributable to the global slowdown that is a result of Covid. Nevertheless, whatever the reason is, there has to be a way to improve his situation.
Anyway, I am determined to find out how we can rectify the situation. When we do, we are willing to share our findings.
Selling Books
So, are there other authors out there in the same boat? Is there anyone out there who knows how to cash in on all this intellectual property?
